Brickbat: Barking Orders
The Lorain, Ohio, police department says it is investigating after Officer Elliott Palmer shot and killed a family's Labrador retriever mix named Dixie. Bodycam video that started after Palmer was already on the scene shows a woman standing in a residential yard trying to control at least three dogs. One dog walked up to Palmer. But Palmer pointed at it and possibly spoke (Palmer had his bodycam muted), and it walked away. Another dog broke away from the woman and ran up to Palmer, who shot the dog and continued to fire at it as the dog limped away.

As a long time hunting dog owner this women needed to put those dogs inside. She can’t control them. As for shooting the dog, it’s hard to tell if it was aggressive or not. Most people have no idea how to train a dog.

The woman was confused since in most situations, she’s the heavy. The suburbia Boyle’s Gas Law where some extend their defensible space onto the property of others and public land. Dogs are usually considered property where the jurisdiction will end up paying a few hundred bucks for what was an untrained pet. If the officer didn’t have the personal skills to deal with a pack of dogs and didn’t have an effective non-lethal means of deterrence such as OC spray, he shouldn’t have gotten out of his cruiser. The street’s hard surface behind his target can result in missed and passed-through shots skipping down the neighborhood. There is a whole lot wrong with this incident.
Yeah, shot the dog on her property or not? Not everyone knows how to train a dog and anyone who can train a dog, including police, can train it to act like an attack is a friendly gesture or to genuinely be perpetrating a normal action or friendly gesture until triggered.
At the same time, de rigueur in Libertopia: if he shot her dog on her property, no one should be surprised if the story ends in a gun fight and the officer gets hanged as responsible for precipitating a gun fight that caused any/all deaths.
Coward or psychopath?
That pup was asking for it, limping away like that.
Coward AND psychopath.
Wait to see if the cop files for disability due to his PTSD following the incident. Many cops have a crippling fear of dogs.
They should be conditioned out of that by being the training dummies for the K9 units.
